Why mae sot?

Burma (also known as Myanmar) is in crisis
Â
Â
Â
Â
2 million Burmese have entered Thailand, fleeing from a cruel military dictatorship. 155,000 Burmese live in refugee camps along the Thai border. Many refugees leave the refugee camps and make their way to Mae Sot, a city 5-7 km from the Thai-Burma border. Mae Sot is a key location for working with these desperate men, women and children. Most of these refugees live in slum communities all around Mae Sot. The communities are extremely poor, children are vulnerable to human trafficking and many live without parents-orphaned without hope in this world.
Â

 * less than half of migrant children attend school
* only 8 of 58 schools/communities have access to purified water
*the Thai government doesn’t support refugee schoolsÂ
* schools survive solely on resourcefulness & creative international support

* Mae Sot is known as the “Gateway to Burma”
* situated 6 hrs northwest of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand
* trade hub for teak and gems
*notorious for its black market services in people trafficking and drugs
